Purchasing Shea Butter
Shea butter is obtained from the fruit that bears its same name. It has a high fat content, approximately 45% to 55%. Pure shea butter has a characteristic scent, which is why at Gran Velada, we recommend using virgin shea butter for making oil soaps. In this way, the caustic soda, during the saponification process, eliminates the strong aroma of the butter.
If you intend to use it for making creams or other cosmetic products, it's preferable to use refined shea butter, as it is odorless and colorless.
Unrefined Shea Butter
Pure, raw, or unrefined shea butter is used in cosmetics for making oil soaps and intensely hydrating hair masks. In the case of handmade soap-making, caustic soda dissipates the strong odor of shea butter, making it highly recommended to add a hydration boost to soaps.
Properties of Shea Butter
Shea butter imparts its properties to the cosmetic products made with it. Among its wonderful properties are the following:
Hydrating and Conditioning: It's suitable for cosmetics aiming to moisturize both the skin and hair due to its nourishing compounds. Additionally, thanks to its vitamin E content, it provides extra softness to tissues, restoring even the most damaged skin. It's perfect for formulating cosmetics that deeply hydrate especially stressed areas like feet, elbows, knees, and hands.
Photoprotective: The active components of shea butter are capable of absorbing a portion of sunlight and UV radiation. For this reason, many sunscreens or after-sun products contain it.
Anti-inflammatory: It has been proven that the natural anti-irritant activity of shea butter helps soothe sensitive skin. That's why it's an ideal ingredient for natural-origin anti-wrinkle creams.
